Meditation is not concentration

"Any meditation that leads you to deepen concentration is wrong, it will not result in compassion. You will become more closed, instead of becoming open. If you reduce your consciousness and concentrate on something, and if you exclude Existence as a whole and becoming directed at one point will create more tension in you. Hence the word attention which means 'a-tension'. The very sound of the word concentration gives you a feeling of tension. (... )
A Buddha is not a man of concentration; he is a man of conscience. He didn't keep trying to reduce his consciousness; on the contrary, he kept trying to abandon all barriers so that he became fully available to Existence. Note, Existence is simultaneous. I'm talking here and the noise traffic is simultaneous. The train, the birds, the breath of the wind in the trees... At this moment, Existence as a whole is convergent. You are listening to me, I am talking to you and millions of things are happening. This is tremendously rich. (...)
So, let me tell you some basic things. First, meditation is not concentration, but relaxation. One simply relaxes into oneself. The more you relax, the more you will feel open, vulnerable and less rigid. You will be more flexible and suddenly Existence will begin to penetrate you. You will no longer be like a rock; you will have openings. Relaxation means allowing yourself to enter a state where you are not doing anything, because if you do something the tension will be there. Relaxation is a state of not-doing. You simply relax and enjoy the feeling of relaxation.
Relax. Simply close your eyes and listen to everything that is happening around you. When you notice something, don't consider it a distraction. The moment you perceive it as a distraction, you are denying God. At this moment God came to you like a bird. Don't deny it. He knocked on your door like a bird. The next moment he arrives like a dog barking, or a child crying, or like a mad man laughing. Don't deny it; do not reject. Accept it, because if you deny it, you will become tense.
All denial creates tension. Accept. If you want to relax, acceptance is the way. Accept everything that is happening around you; allow this to become an organic whole. And is. You may know this or not. Everything is interrelated. These birds, these trees, this sky, this Sun, this Earth, you, me – everything is related. Everything is an organic unity. If the Sun disappears, the trees will disappear; if the trees disappear, the birds will disappear; if the birds and trees disappear, you cannot be here, you will disappear. This is an ecology. Everything is deeply related to everything else. (...)
If you relax, you accept; acceptance of Existence is the only way to relax. If a small thing disturbs you, it is your attitude that is disturbing you. Sit quietly, listen to everything that is happening around you and relax. Accept it, relax, and suddenly you will notice an immense energy rising within you. This energy will initially be perceived as a deepening of your breathing. Normally your breathing is very shallow and sometimes if you try to breathe more deeply, if you start to do pranayam, you start to force something, you make an effort. Such effort is not necessary. Simply accept life, relax and suddenly you will find that your breathing is going deeper than usual. Relax more and the breath will go deeper into you. It becomes slow, rhythmic and you can almost taste it; it brings a certain pleasure. You will then become aware that breathing is the bridge between you and the Whole. Simply observe. Don't do anything.
And when I say watch, no ties observe; otherwise you will tense up again and start focusing on your breathing. Simply relax; remain relaxed and loose. And look, because what else can you do? You are there, there is nothing to be done, everything has been accepted, there is nothing to be denied or rejected, no fight, no quarrel, no conflict and the breath keeps deepening...What can you do? You simply observe. Remember: simply observe."
