When joy arises, become it

In the joy of seeing a long-absent friend, penetrate that joy.

Enter that joy and become one with it - any joy, any happiness. This is just an example: when seeing a friend long gone ... Suddenly, you see a friend you haven't seen for many, many days, or many, many years. You are overcome with sudden joy. But your attention will be on the friend, not on your joy. Then you will be missing something and that joy will be momentary. Your attention is focused on the friend, you will start talking, remembering things, and you will lose that joy and it will go away. 

When you see a friend and suddenly feel a joy rising in your heart, focus on that joy. Feel it and become it, and find the friend while you are conscious and filled with your joy. Let the friend simply be on the periphery while you remain focused on your feeling of happiness.

This can be done in many other situations. The sun is rising and, suddenly, you feel something rising inside you. So, forget about the sun, let it stay on the periphery. Be centered on your own feeling of rising energy. The moment you look at it, it will spread. It will become your whole body, your whole being. And don't just be an observer of it, dissolve in it. There are very few moments when you feel joy, happiness, ecstasy, but you keep losing them because you become centered on the object.

Whenever there is joy, you feel that it is coming from outside.

You've found a friend, it's natural to seem like the joy is coming from your friend, from seeing him. But it's not the case. Joy is always within you. The friend just created the situation. The friend helped her come out, helped him see she's there. And that's not just with joy, but with anything: with anger, with sadness, with misery, with happiness, it's like that with everything. Others just create situations in which the things that are hidden in you are expressed. They are not the causes, they are not causing you anything. Whatever is happening is happening to you. That was always there. It was only the meeting with this friend that created the situation in which everything that was hidden came to open, came out. From hidden sources it became apparent, manifest. Whenever this happens, stay centered on the innermost sensation, and then you will have a different attitude about everything in life. 

Even with negative emotions, do this. When you are angry, don't be centered on the person who brought you up. Let it stay on the periphery. Simply become the anger. Feel the anger in its entirety; allow it to happen internally. Don't rationalize, don't say that it was this man who created you. Do not condemn the man. He simply created the situation. And feel thankful to him for helping something that was hidden to come out. It hit him somewhere and the wound was hidden there. Now that you know her, become the wound.

Use this with any emotion, negative or positive, and there will be a big change in you. If the emotion is negative you will get rid of it by becoming aware that it is within you. If the emotion is positive, you will become the emotion itself. If it is joy, you will become joy; if it is anger, the anger will dissolve.

And that is the difference between negative and positive emotions. If you become aware of a certain emotion and, when you become aware, the emotion dissolves, then it is negative. If by becoming aware of a certain emotion, you become the emotion itself and then it spreads and becomes your being, it is positive. Consciousness works differently in both cases. If it is a poisonous emotion, you release it through awareness. If she is good, happy and ecstatic, you become one with her. Consciousness deepens it.

So, for me, that is the criterion: if something is deepened by your awareness, it is something good. If anything dissolves through consciousness, it is something bad. That which fails to remain in consciousness is sin and that which grows in consciousness is virtue. Virtue and sin are not social concepts, they are more internal perceptions. 

Use your conscience. It is exactly as if there were darkness and you brought the light: the darkness will no longer be there. Just by bringing the light, the darkness will no longer be there, because in fact it was not. It was negative, it was just the absence of light. But many things that are there will become manifest. Just by bringing the light, these shelves, these books, these walls, will not disappear. In the darkness they were not, you could not see them. If you bring the light, the darkness will no longer be there, but what is true will be revealed. Through consciousness, everything that is negative like darkness will be dissolved - hate, anger, sadness, violence. 

And then love, joy and ecstasy, for the first time, will be revealed to you. Like this, in the joy of seeing a long-absent friend, penetrate that joy.
