It is an overgrowth of cells that occurs in the wall of the uterus. Small lumps are formed, look like costs and develop towards the inside of the uterus. Those that appear on the cervix are called endocervical polyps.
Menopausal women are the most affected, however, in younger women they can also appear, and this can make it difficult to get pregnant.
Polyps are most often a benign lesion, it is important to follow up with your doctor every 6 months. Cases that turn malignant are rare.
The polyp can be discovered through colposcopic examination or transvaginal ultrasound and can be asymptomatic, in some cases that present symptoms the woman can feel:
.vaginal bleeding between each period
.vaginal bleeding after menopause
.very profuse menstruation
.strong cramps
.vaginal bleeding after intercourse
In rare cases, polyps that are located on the cervix can become infected, if this occurs a yellowish vaginal discharge can occur.
Change in estrogen hormone is directly linked to the appearance of polyps. Obesity, overweight, high blood pressure, or use of tamoxifen (a medication to treat breast cancer) are also possible causes.
In most cases, uterine polyps do not require treatment and the gynecologist may recommend observation only.
